The series consists of photographs (mainly copyprints) and photocopies of photographs. The images document the "Deer Mission" organized by the Office of Strategic Services and led by Allison Thomas in the Kim Long area of Vietnam in 1945. The photographs show OSS members parachuting into the region, the base camp near Kim Long, the training of guerilla forces, and their interactions with Ho Chi Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap. Other pictures show a Vietminh party meeting in Hanoi and Hanoi after the Japanese surrender in 1945.

Allison Kent Thomas commanded an Office of Strategic Services group that parachuted into Vietnam in 1945 to train the Vietnamese resistance, led by Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap, against the Japanese. He received an A.B. in 1935 and a J.D. in 1939 from the University of Michigan. Thomas later practiced law in East Lansing, Michigan.
